Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOP),
I. Physikalisches Institut,
Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen

The Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOP) group of the I. Physikalisches Institut of the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen emerged from the Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics that was headed by Prof. Dr. Alfred Müller until his retirement in April 2015. The AMOP group’s research focuses on the physics of atomic collision processes. The research covers fundamental questions in atomic and molecular structure as well as applications in atomic and molecular spectroscopy, astrophysics, and plasma physics. The group performs experiments with charged particle beams (electrons, multiply charged and highly charged atomic ions, molecular ions, cluster ions) using experimental setups at home and at external research facilities such as the ion storage-rings at FAIR/GSI in Darmstadt and at the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. The group also pursues photon-ion interaction studies at synchrotron-light sources as, e.g., PETRA III at DESY in Hamburg.
