Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory (XAO) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 1957, and the headquarters located in Urumqi. XAO maintains and operates several field stations including Nanshan, Kashgar and Qitai. The areas of current research include radio astronomy, optical astronomy and applied astronomy, microwave receiver and antenna technology, and telescope engineering. XAO is a member of Key Radio Astronomy Laboratories of CAS and runs the International Research Centre for Radio Astronomy and Technology. XAO is currently equipped with two 25-m radio telescopes, a 1-m wide-field optical telescope, a GPS receiver system, etc. In addition, a fully-steerable 110-m aperture radio telescope (Qitai radio Telescope, QTT) is being built in Qitai, Xinjiang.
